Is It Still A Repair?
Four questions. The answers run on the same rules a glass tech uses with the windshield in front of them, and the honest answer is sometimes no.
1. Where is the damage?
Standing in front of the car, looking at the glass, so the driver's side is on the right. The dashed line sits roughly two inches in from the frame.
Nothing checked yet.Mark the spot on the glass above, then answer the three questions. The verdict lands here.
Does Your Car Watch The Road Through That Glass?
If it does, the windshield is not a window. It is a sensor mount, and swapping the glass without recalibrating the camera leaves the car aiming at the wrong place.
Tick anything your car actually does
Tick What Your Car Does And The Answer Lands Here.
Most drivers have no idea whether their car has a forward camera. It sits in a black housing behind the mirror, and it is the reason a windshield job on a newer car is not the same job it was ten years ago.
What The Glass Is Holding Up
A windshield is not trim. It is a bonded structural panel, and the adhesive under it has a clock on it.
Federal roof crush testing treats the windshield as structure. Published figures put the glass at 30 to 70 percent of a roof's strength in a rollover. Whatever the number is on your car, it is not zero, and it depends entirely on the bond holding.
FMVSS 212 measures windshield retention. Three quarters of the glass has to stay attached to the pinchweld through the crash. On top of that, the passenger airbag deploys against the windshield. It is the backstop the bag pushes off, so if the bond has not taken, the glass can go instead of the bag doing its job.
That is fast cure urethane. Conventional adhesive runs two to eight hours or longer, and full strength takes 24 to 72 hours either way. Safe drive away time is not “the glue is dry”. It is the point the bond could hold the glass through a crash. Anyone who hands your keys back in twenty minutes should be able to name the adhesive and the temperature it was rated at.
Your Insurer Can Recommend. It Cannot Require.
No insurer shall require that an automobile be repaired at a specific automotive repair dealer.California Insurance Code, section 758.5(a)
Call a glass claim in and you will often be handed a shop. That is a referral, not an instruction. Under the same section, a carrier is not even supposed to suggest a specific shop unless you asked for a referral, or you were told in writing that the choice is yours.
California is not a free glass state. Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina have zero deductible glass laws. California does not, so your comprehensive deductible applies unless you carry separate glass coverage. Worth knowing before you file, because on a chip repair the claim is sometimes worth less than the deductible.
Either way the shop is your call. Tell Russell what you have and he will tell you straight whether it is worth running through insurance at all.
What Comes Through The Shop
Windshield Replacement
The glass out, the pinchweld cleaned and primed, a fresh bead, and a drive away time you get told rather than guess at.
Rock Chip Repair
Resin into the break before it runs. It keeps the factory seal, which is the one thing a replacement can never give back.
Door And Quarter Glass
Side glass shatters into pellets and gets everywhere. The glass is half the job. Vacuuming the door cavity is the other half.
Back Glass
Usually tempered, usually with the defroster grid printed on it, and it needs the connections put back the way they came off.
