Not sure it can be cleaned? Ask before you throw it out. Vintage pieces, heirloom linen, a gown that has been in a box for twenty years and a jacket somebody already had a go at repairing at home are all worth a look first. Some of it is saveable. We will tell you straight when it is not.

Most people have never been told what these mean, and the two that look almost identical, the circle with a P and the circle with an F, are the ones that get garments ruined at shops that only run one machine.

Dry Clean

An Instruction, Not A Verdict

Federal care labelling rules only require a manufacturer to give one method of safe care. A label reading “Dry Clean” is the method they tested and stand behind. It is not proof that every other method would destroy the garment.

A Warning, Taken Literally

The word “only” is doing real work. It states that other methods will harm the garment, and it usually appears because of a lining, an interfacing, a trim or a dye that water would wreck even when the outer fabric would be fine.

The Stain You Cannot See

Sugar Dries Clear, Then Turns Brown.

White wine, champagne, soda, tonic, apple juice. They dry invisible and you hang the garment up thinking nothing happened. The sugar left in the fibre oxidises the same way a cut apple browns, and a yellow mark surfaces later where there was nothing at all.

  • 01Point at it anyway. Tell us where the spill was even when there is nothing to see, and we can flush it out before it has the chance to turn.
  • 02Heat is what brings it forward. A hot car, a sunny window or a household dryer will surface it far sooner than it would have come up on its own.
  • 03Once it has turned it is a bleaching problem rather than a cleaning one. We will try, and we will tell you straight when it is not coming out.
